Should you be doing extra core work in the gym? Here are my thoughts + 10 core exercises to add into your training šš¼š„
IS EXTRA CORE WORK NECESSARY?
During workouts (especially functional fitness workouts) it essential that your core remains braced. This is to both protect your spine and to create efficient and strong movement. With that being said, our core is always being trained indirectly with all movements in the gym. So, do we NEED to do extra core work outside of that? In my professional opinion, YES. Just like any other training movement or skill, the core needs direct attention (not just indirect). Bracing your core (especially with movement, under fatigue, and while breathing) is a skill just like anything else that deserves your full intention and time. Your core is your very foundation. It is the base to which our extremities are able to perform movement.
Stable core = efficient force transfer to our extremities = STRONG movement.

END STORY- DO YOUR CORE WORK.
2-3 times per week is ideal. I LOVE adding core into my warm-ups to prep for lifts. For a full core circuit, it is best to add in at the end of your workouts.
